For anyone thinking of joining in as part of the Harrogate International Fringe Festival 2013, don’t bother. They want to charge you £50 to be in the brochure and on posters, which they won’t distribute despite making you pay.

The fringe was supposed to be a celebration of local arts, and instead became a pet project of the corporate festival, with no proper support and no advertisement despite asking people to pay for the ‘privilege’ of being in a brochure, which wasn’t actually distributed at promotional events and left in a dusty cupboard.

Local arts need support, but not at the behest of a corporate entity that treats local artists and performers as a sideshow with derisory pats on the head.

here is a recent exchange with the festival organisers:

I just wanted to get in touch with you regarding the Harrogate International Festivals Fringe following my letter sent to you on 12th December 2012. I hope you received this ok.

I just wanted to follow up with you regarding the move of the Festivals Fringe and whether you had any events planned for the end of May/Early June 2013 that you would be interested in including in the Fringe this year? I would love to get your input on this and if you have any feedback please do get in touch with me on 01423 562 303.

Hey Louisa,

The plans for the Fringe sound great. Unfortunately, last years events that Poems, Prose and Pints held did not even cover the cost of appearing in the brochure.

There seems to be confusion around the state of PPP. We were a small organisation who never made a profit, for a once monthly meeting in the back room of a bar featuring guest poets who were paid with the takings of the meeting.

While the events will be held as normal, the former team has disbanded and PPP is now just a gathering of poets reading their work. As it stand, the night is being run by Tim Ellis and not Nicola and I due to jobs and illness.

PPP has been part of the fringe since it started and it was because of the support Graham Chalmers has for local events that we were included.

With the price of that support now being more than the yearly profit, even at £50, it’s too expensive for PPP to be involved.
